Fitchburg is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 20,501 at the 2000 census. Fitchburg is a suburb of Madison.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.9 square miles (90.3 km²), of which, 34.8 square miles (90.2 km²) of it's land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.11%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 20,501 people, 8,262 households, and 4,825 families residing in the city. The population density was 588.8 people per square mile (227.3/km²). There were 8,604 housing units at an average density of 247.1/sq mi (95.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.19% White, 8.64% African American, 0.42% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.05% from other races, and 2.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.48% of the population.
   There were 8,262 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, and 41.6% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.00.
   In the city the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.0 males.
   The median income for a household in the city was $50,433, and the median income for a family was $64,106. Males had a median income of $37,440 versus $27,974 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,317. About 5.0% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.
